As the snow started to melt, the rain started to fall, and there was water everywhere. So what better than to get down and dirty with it in the churning depths of the River Erme? We trudged off along the road and through the woods feeling ever so slightly silly in our wetsuits, but in fact they were the most sensible things to be wearing, given the amount of rain. The river was totally alive. Waterfalls had appeared out of nowhere and were thundering into the pools. The river was tumbling over itself in its race onwards. We swam in one of the larger pools, which is normally tranquil. Not today.

Snowsurfing - the movie
Today Devon felt like the Alps. There was bright sunshine, brilliant blue skies and thick snow. We found a beautifully carpeted hill where we had surreally exhilarating rides, lying on our stomachs on surfboards. Watch - and listen - to the video to get the full experience, and hear the distress cry of an adult male.....

Snowsurfing
Although blizzard conditions unfortunately resulted in two hundred people being trapped in their cars in Devon overnight, it also meant we could stay at home and take advantage of the snow. We grabbed our surfboards and headed out the Terrace, a steep hill in Ashburton. Lots of others had the same idea, and there were shrieks and whoops as people whizzed down, with frequent emergency stops in the hedge at the bottom. Who needs a sledge when you've got surfboards?

Wind chill factor
As icy winds blew in from Russia, ahead of predicted snow, we walked up to the Avon Dam. It felt as though we were behind the iron curtain in the cold war era. A monolithic structure; a vast wall of water; a strange little hut to the side with a sign warning us to keep out. Grey and grim.

Underwater world
Ok, this picture wasn't taken today, but it's January, it's dreary and wet, and I need a reminder of the good times. This was me and a friend attempting to swim around Burgh Island a couple of summers ago (remember when we had summers?). The highlight of that swim was a glowing pink starfish shining like a tiny underwater beacon on a rock. May there be many more swims and starfish this summer.

Santa comes early
I was sitting drinking a cup of tea and reading the Guardian when I heard the sound of piped carols. It got louder and louder; then there was a knock on the door. I opened it to find Father Christmas sitting on his sleigh outside, though there were no reindeers in evidence; he was being pulled along by a man in a Landrover. It is a lovely festive tradition in Ashburton. In the days up to Christmas, Santa travels around the town, calling on local children and raising money for charity.
